My Great Uncle passed away on Monday. He was 102 years old, and still of sharp mind. He was farming 160 of his 600 acres until he was 100. He was one hell of person!!
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Marines and fought in the Pacific Theater -- including battles at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Guam, and Iwo Jima -- through the end of the war, attaining the rank of Platoon Sergeant in charge of Field Artillery Firing Control. His weapons qualification was that of Expert, achieved within the first month of his enlistment.
He and my Grandmother made a big impact on my view of the world, and I got to see first hand what a person of immense quality looks like. It saddens that he had to pass away at this time, removed from the normal contact of family, I will blame the governor of Minnesota for that.
He was a simple person and an amazing man. He will be missed!!!!!
