He never read 1984 or anything then

76
DonttrustChina 76 points ago +81 / -5

1984 isn't left or right. The Party is whatever system you're afraid of. The message isn't political, it's philosophical, it's about the human condition.

42
smartredditor 42 points ago +42 / -0

Some of the story's elements are being actively mimicked by modern liberals. Specifically "newspeak." Liberals use words like racist, sexist, etc. to describe people and things that aren't the least bit racist or sexist. They'll scream "defund the police" and then tell you that it doesn't actually mean defund the police. Equality no longer means equal rights, but special rights for some. I could go on and on but this practice is the most Orwellian thing our current society faces.

23
TheSmirkofBillBarr 23 points ago +23 / -0

Don't forget about the Ministry of Truth. oops, I meant "independent fact checkers" and social media...

12
smartredditor 12 points ago +12 / -0

Yep, the only real difference is that our "Big Brother" isn't a government, it's a mix of tech and media companies. For centuries governments have been the oppressors of the people, no one really foresaw the biggest challenge to personal freedom coming from a media cabal - but history books will cover it in a century or so.

5
TravisRSCX 5 points ago +5 / -0

We have to win first to make sure the history books are written correctly.

3
hello-mayo 3 points ago +3 / -0

Yeah. As long as the left controls academia, people won't learn about it, or will just have a superficial amount of knowledge on the matter, not enough to matter.

6
DonttrustChina 6 points ago +6 / -0

Yeah, that's quite true. But Orwell was trying to write a warning, not an instruction manual.

15
TD_Covfefe_Crusader 15 points ago +15 / -0

Totalitarianism is a leftist condition. Orwell was a socialist and was very familiar with the ideology.

9
EndHumanTrafficking2 9 points ago +9 / -0

1984 is about government control which is left wing. Right wing is about lessening government control.

Government control is an essential part of communism/socialism.

Again, right wing is about reducing government power. To give an example, under President Trump for every new regulation, 12 old regulations have been repealed.

1
DonttrustChina 1 point ago +2 / -1

In our modern society, many of the most Orwellian figures are not governments. Big tech, the media, globalist NGOs like the WHO.

Now those groups are for the most part left-wing. But imagine they weren't. Imagine twitter were run by Christian fundamentalists, who manipulated their rules and abused "fact checks" to censor those who disagreed with creationists, while the media argued that degenerate speech is not free speech and debated whether it's okay to punch a commie.

All the while, a libright government did little or nothing because "they're private companies", as they amassed monopoly or pseudo-monopoly power and took increasing de facto control over our lives.

You would start to get a society that resembles 1984, even though it's not technically a government doing it. Just a government enabling it. And in that case it would be a right wing version.

1
EndHumanTrafficking2 1 point ago +1 / -0

The key word you use is "imagine".

You can't give a real life example of right wing government control because it's a contradiction in terms. Right wing ideology is about less government control.

So instead you talk about Big Tech, but again you can't give a real life example because it doesn't exist, so you have to "imagine" one.

All real life Big Tech companies which abuse their power are left wing. Facebook, twitter, google, etc, are all left wing.

Gab, a right wing social media platform, is totally for free speech. 4chan, a right wing forum, is totally for free speech. 8kun, a right wing forum, is totally for free speech. Cheer leader platforms like thedonald.win exist, but they openly promote themselves as being exclusively for President Trump supporters. Right wing platforms for everybody will always by definition support free speech.

I can't believe you are even debating this. Increased government control is at the very core of left wing ideology. Increased individual freedom is at the very core of right wing ideology.

You're right. But then if he understood that, he wouldn't have been surprised about the left becoming totalitarian twats. Any group in power that takes away your right to question them becomes The Party and brings slavery along with them. No one should ever be complacent. It's far too dangerous in a world where there are people who will say and do literally anything for power, even unthinkable things.

How about this:

1984 could also be a right-wing dystopia. Tyranny comes in many colors.

18
TheUncouthTruth 18 points ago +18 / -0

How? The right is all about smaller govt that stays out of people’s business. Not sure 1984 authoritarian dystopia even could be right wing.

6

What you're "about" is irrelevant. Being able to manipulate people is all that matters with 1984.

7

1
Ben45 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yea, that is the easier way to go about 1984 since they are openly advocating for more government and have the Fake News on their side. But a right wing dystopia is just as possible as long as you can give the people the illusion of freedom and choice.

And having a republican government could lead to its own 1984 where the govt is so irrelevant that monopolies dictate life instead. Different Big Brother, but the same thing. See Google, Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, Disney, Concast for the proof. Although in this case it is the ineffectiveness of govt, not our govt's size that is the problem.

AuthRight exists.

Let's imagine for a second the libs were right, just for the sake of argument, and Trump got up this morning and announced he was President for life and anyone who opposed him would be shot.

That wouldn't somehow make him left wing, all of his beliefs and agenda would still be the same, he'd just be forcing it. He'd be a right wing dictator.

There is no "Right Wing".

"Left v Right" is a dichotomy taught to us by the Left. The idea that the NAZIs were "Right Wing" is a falsity taught to us by the Left (in a [successful] attempt to hide the fact that the NAZIs were Left Wing).

No, there is no "Right Wing". There are only Totalitarians, and Individualists. This explains why "the Left Wing" (Totalitarians) is organized (they are a Leninist Vanguard coupled with Lenin's "Useful Idiots"), and those who are "not Left Wing" are just "everyone else" trying to live life and keep getting pulled into this "Everything Is Political" Totalitarian Vortex.

Fvck these people.

3
The_American_Son 3 points ago +3 / -0

Yup, there is no “right wing” in our government because we have 3 coequal branches of government and a bicameral legislature. Left-Right stems from European politics where the extreme right wing would be monarchy. Obviously that doesn’t map on to American conservatism. The entire US left/right dichotomy is another form of subversion by our ever increasing left, which legitimately does now exist in the Democratic Party.

2
marvinthehaggler 2 points ago +2 / -0

So great to see that others "get it". My salute to you, my Fellow Pede.

1
VivaElEmperadorDios 1 point ago +1 / -0

There is a right wing, but they are anarchists, who by definition do not organize as a group. Most of western political parties have been pretty much in the center until the last 30 years where China has influenced everything in America, and they now own the media, most of the entertainment industry and the democrat party.

The left vs right scale that you see now is literally newspeaked by the leftists. Anything that doesn't show communists and nazis on the same side of the scale is a democrat invention.

1
marvinthehaggler 1 point ago +1 / -0

Sounds like we agree.

Anarchists are either of the "violent overthrow" variety (and sometimes banded together, usually in small groups I guess), or they are just super-Libertarian sort of people. In either case I am not sure we can call them a "Wing".

Under President Trump, for every new regulation, 12 old regulations have been repealed. Less government control is an essential part of being right wing.

and first wave punk was 75 to around 80.

Unless you mean 80s - 90s punks, but Lydon and his peers were definitely late boomers.

This guy knows his history.

I was born in 65, so right on the border, but when I was 13 - 15 years old, I hated hippies and thought they were so lame, so punk was really a great alternative. Most of the punk bands members were older than me, but not too old to relate to.

If you want to drill down a bit into it, by the time I was 20 in 1985, there was a "second wave" of punk called hardcore, that looked at the first wave punks with a bit of derision, almost like hippies and could not stand the "new wave" stuff that record companies decided was safe enough to publish.

This was a really great time for music, as there really was a broad spectrum of music and many great original sub-genres split off from punk.

AKCHUALLY, the original punks were “Generation Jones,” on which this link has a great explanation:

https://youtu.be/eKLJNGJsXlg

They were originally called GenX but somehow got subsumed into the Boomer category while the kids my age (70’s and 80’s kids) were designated as X and the first REAL Xers were re-termed “Jones”, then that got dropped and forgotten and they just got lumped into the Boomer Borg.

Which is unfair because...The original source of the term “Generation X” was the eponymous 90’s book (which itself took the name from Billy Idol’s band) by Douglas Coupland. In it he drew a picture of disaffected teens in the 1970’s, burdened by huge expectations yet left with little, due to everything (opportunity, resources, attention) having been sucked up and exhausted by the Boomers. Thus, even though GenX was originally about people who were teens and young adults in the 70’s, that only lasted like a year before “Jones” as in “jonesing” for something came along to replace it. Maybe X got associated with my age (born in 72) because that’s who was coming up in the 90’s when the book came out, or maybe just the Boomers in charge of marketing and influence at the time (remember how the letter X was EVERYWHERE in the 90’s?) didn’t want to be painted in such a narcissistic light, who knows.

People like to argue about this forever but that’s my take on it, from someone who’s been paying attention since the term “Generation X” was a punk band. :)

Here's a history lesson from someone who lived it. Many people born at the end of the baby boom generation were, indeed, in the vanguard of the punk movement. Us late boomers were very much UNlike our older brothers and sisters. In a way, we were outcasts from the Boomer Generation.

Our older siblings were hippies. We wanted to be cool like them, but they never accepted us into their group. Think of it: I was only 11 years old when Woodstock occurred. When my older brother was dropping acid at a Jimi Hendrix concert I was still playing with Lego on my bedroom floor. To my older siblings, I was just the bothersome "punk kid brother." I was too young for the military draft, never understood the hatred for Nixon, and certainly wasn't on board with the disdain for soldiers returning from Vietnam.

The Baby Boom Generation is said to be those born from 1946 to 1964. In my experience, many of us born from about 1957 to 1964 didn't fit in with the baby boomers. There was never an official name for late Boomers, but I call us "The Blank Generation." (See album and song of the same name by Richard Hell and the Voidoids). For the Blank Generation, when punk rock hit, it was a defining moment. It was a revelation. It embodied an ethos we recognized and many of us embraced. It was a fuck you to our older siblings. A Fuck You to hippies. Fuck your fake "peace, love, and understanding." You've become the exact thing you hated. To the gods of rock, we said, "You are fake, filthy rich rock-and-roll "rebels" snorting piles of cocaine while jetting from coast to coast in your private DC10. Fuck you! Even your music has become fake and next to impossible to reproduce in a live concert!" Punk differentiated the Blank Generation from the Boomers.

The term "punk kid brother" took on a new meaning. Older Boomers viewed Punks the same way the WWII Generation viewed hippies-- with apprehension and disgust.

Punks despised the Boomer hippy ethos, which is the ethos of the modern Democrat Party. Meanwhile, the modern conservative movement embodies the best of the old punk outlook. For me, evolving politically from Punk to conservative was fluid, was easy, was quite natural.

So this is my experience and my understanding. I'm interested to learn how others experienced the punk era.

I was told Republicans were to blame for my problems, but I live in a blue state that's been blue for 3 decades. Started researching and caught on to the scam.

Democrats need poor people willing to vote to save themselves, and they need rich people thinking positive by donating to a fucking politician whose piss trickle won't ever impact a watershed let alone an actually poor person willing to work. The reality is when times are tough we just need to tough it out.

The Left has been in charge to some degree for a long, long time. Lefties like to think how awful the CIA was for doing various regime change ops all over, but it wasn't right-wingers - it was globalists. The CIA and such have been compromised one way or another from the beginning. Eisenhower, JFK, and Reagan, were the only "right-wingers". Nixon could have been, but price controls and the federal takeover of healthcare that he proposed were not exactly right-wing ideas. So between the end of WWII and the end of the century, we had about 18 or 19 years of "right-wing" governance.

Being on the right in the West has been cool since punk rock, since the Ramones and others.

Except it's always been this way..

The Democrats have dominated politics in this country for the last 100 years. They lost control only a few times, during which the civil rights movement happened, and Reagan happened. It shouldn't surprise anybody why we've lost so much ground in the last 50 years.

The democrats lost the civil rights fight, yet somehow convinced black Americans to keep sucking their dicks for sustenance.

The democrats created gun control to strip freed blacks of power. Gun Control was a tax they couldn't afford. Class discrimination.

The democrats lost the civil rights war.

The democrats put Japanese Americans into Concentration Camps.

The democrats nuked hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese civilians to "win a war" when the japanese had no teeth left to attack with.

The democrats have always been the enemies of freedom, the purveyors chaos, and the cum guzzling, cock sucking scum bags of American history. There was never a time when being a Democrat meant anything else. Only the uninformed voters tell themselves otherwise.
