Back in Reagan's day, most conservatives still thought Democrats were good people with bad ideas instead of the America hating communist pigs they truly are. Even Trump has listened to the wrong people, but he knows how bad it is now and won't be getting fooled much in his second term.
Anyone who is younger and switched on as we are will recognize that the Ds are Commies who want you dead, or at least in a "re-education camp".
But back in Reagan's day, people largely viewed Democrats as being Americans and "similar in many ways" to non-Democrats. And, I would say that most of them were this.
Not anymore.
EDIT: Even back then, I should add, the Democrat's "Vanguard" were very much committed anti-American Commie Scum. They were just better at hiding it and also the American people were much more asleep due to not having the access to information we have now. See: Ted Kennedy's letter to Andropov asking to partner with the Soviets to oust Reagan.

I disagree with that. Some were, yes. But JFK? Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile crisis, Space Race, Vietnam, Anti Commie Propaganda. But I do believe he was the last good democrat president. Perhaps the only
Joe Kennedy made a deal with the Mafia to get JFK elected, but then stabbed them in the back by having Attorney General Bobby Kennedy throw them all in jail. Many believe that's why JFK and Bobby were both assassinated.
Decades later, Hillary had JFK Jr. killed to secure her seat as New York Senator.
If JFK was a good guy (and I will say that much of what is in his speeches I like a lot), please compare and contrast his words and deeds to the words and deeds of his Father (a gangster) and his brother Ted (a Commie).
Not sure how you can count "Vietnam" in the "good" column. Unless you agree with Kissinger's (racist) "Domino Theory". In any case, we lacked commitment to that "war" and actually one of the key people in "securing our loss" in that war is Lunchbox Joe Biden. Yep. He "secured that loss" for us. Him and fvcking Cronkite.
The Bay of Pigs was a CIA disaster, the Cuban Missile Crisis was one of the closest-to-annihilation moments mankind has ever experienced, and was really predicated on Khruschev's view that JFK was a pussy. We escaped that moment by the skin of our teeth, and indeed McNamara in "Fog of War" confesses that Castro told him himself that Castro had ordered nuclear missiles to be fired on the USA, and his people had disobeyed him.
I like JFK. But I think I like his speeches more than I like the man himself.
The 1986 bill actually mandated construction of new border wall/fence - that was important to Reagan or else he wouldn't sign it. But subsequent congresses refused to fund construction. Only thing I fault Reagan for is he wasn't cynical and distrustful enough to smell it coming.
I don't think that was Reagan's intention. I think he was too gullible and trusting of the people informing him. It turned out to be a disaster.
Trump has seen too many shady deals to get lured in as Reagan did.
