Seems like there's a fair amount of misunderstanding out there around this data.
It is obtained from the FEC website. It can be browsed via their UI: Top Menu-> Campaign finance data-> Look up contributions from specific individuals.
You can apply filters via that UI then export filtered datasets under 500k rows, eg filtered by zip code or city. Alternately, find the link to 'bulk data' to export larger, unfiltered data sets.
These exports include name and address, including street, as well as employer. Basically, whatever you told the campaign when you made the contribution.
Not seeing yourself? The UI view has some date filters applied by default. Try changing those. Searching by name? Note that the names are displayed LAST, FIRST. Also, there seems to be a filing window for the campaigns. So, if you contributed last week and don't see yourself listed, it may be they have just not filed the paperwork yet.
It's an interesting data set. I see no reason why it should be useful only to the left. Granted we aren't out to intimidate people, so would not use it as they have. But, ponder what sort of knowings could be gleaned from analyzing your town and/or state! Might it be useful to plot the heavier dem-contributing areas and focus on those when you go cruising with your TRUMP Flag?? A little intel could win higher salt returns!
