They know that it takes x days for the post office to deliver a letter to a certain zip code. You can look it up for yourself on the postal website. Date the letter in advance x days. Easy.

But why would you do that? The date is supposed to be the date the letter was written.

True. I have no good answer. Maybe they wanted some kid to think that the letter magically arrived on the same day?
