These life long politicians get addicted to doing nothing and getting paid for it. People think they get paid 200K a year. They don't. They get much more. They get to BANK 200K a year and don't have to spend a dime of it, because they get paid MUCH MORE in travel, food, communication, and lodging reimbursements and expenses. They get to hire dozens of staff members to be their gophers, who also use expense cards to buy them whatever they need.
Imagine being given everything you need to survive, plus all the luxury you could ever want on top of that, for literally waking up whenever you want, never having to do physical labor, never being responsible to anyone or any people, and all you have to do is sometimes show up in a building and say yes or no, and then campaign once every 2-6 years, which only entails a few speeches a week.
Politicians do so little, they probably feel tired just opening their wine bottle, and that's assuming their gopher staff isn't available to do it for them.
We need not only TERM LIMITS, but we also need to make public office an UNPAID position.
Cover basic expenses, like providing a dorm room, a bus pass, a cellphone, and cafeteria food, but that's it. Make it so only people who want to serve their country sign up. No HANDOUTS!
