I think it would have been a non-issue anyway. Trump said for them to stand down and stand by. If they actively go against Trump's orders, then how in any way is that group's actions tied to Trump?

He fucked up in the first debate when Biden brought up the Proud Boys by misspeaking.

So of course Biden was going to use this to scare the normies that Trumps big bad paramilitary band of the Proud Boys is intimidating lil ole grandma.

It was a false flag stopped in less than 24 hours to take that away from Biden
