It's a goofy guilty-pleasure pre-MTV sort of thing : ) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_Metal_(film) (Like the magazine, it's cartoons but not really for kids due to nudity/violence etc.) Rife with cut-corners/executive meddling/production hell issues. Most of my love for this movie comes from the intent of the artists and the care they put into it, despite the cost-cutting "efforts" and other silliness imposed by the Embezzlement Specialists at the movie studio.
I was a big fan of the magazine before the movie came out (it was the precursor to the modern graphic-novel stuff like "V For Vendetta" etc.) Although Heavy Metal (the magazine) has been very influential on many movies (if not outright ripped-off-from,) few writers/directors give proper credit to the source of their plagiarisms.
>Bonus moar fun with that:
Frequent contributor Moebius did the cover art for a French release of "Are You Experienced" and "Axis Bold As Love," the Jimi Hendrix albums. Here's some of his Jimi Hendrix art, putting Jimi into the alien-desert landscapes typical of Moebius' work.
absolutely AMAZING! What great artwork!!
Moebius does interesting stuff <3 <3 <3 His work is the basis for the "Taarna" story art (the warrior-girl from the aforementioned video.)
The Taarna character in the movie is done with "rotoscoping" which is an early version of today's "motion capture" technique for translating actors' motions to animation. The model (Carole Desbiens) acted out Taarna's scenes, then artists manually traced her frame-by-frame to make the animation. The flying scenes are done in a similar way, with real aerial photography (and miniature landscapes) manually traced as animation frames. Here's a short video showing how that process was done. (2mins 14secs, NSFW minor cartoon-nudity-as-art)
Moar Easter eggs: This Stevie Nicks song was intended for the Belladonna album, but ended up in this movie instead : )
Wow... Its a lot like Fire and Ice in that regard - sweet!
Yes! That's another goodie (collaboration between Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_and_Ice_(1983_film) Moar "rotoscoping" to get human movement/film footage into animation frames. : )
If you're into that style (swords & sorcery, warrior babes, the original Conan The Barbarian art) "Painting With Fire" is a fun documentary on the work of Frank Frazetta : )
