I was born in the Philippines, grew up there til I was 5 then immigrated (legally!) to the US. My mom had come a couple years earlier to lay the groundwork. Her and my dad eventually became estranged & for all intents and purposes “divorced” (not common among socially conservative, Catholic, Filipinos). So maybe I’m actually 1st gen Fil-Am...mom eventually remarried and I have younger half-siblings who’ve had all the advantages of growing up in America. Though they’ve grown up more liberal, slurping up the CA koolaid, I’ve always been wary of the schooling and leftist undercurrent of the California upbringing. Proud to serve this country, and I KNOW if I had grown up elsewhere, I wouldn’t have appreciated the freedoms I’ve enjoyed and been where I am now.
