I preferred the first one as well, but there's a segment of the US that has some weird platonic notion of "presidential" in their heads and they need to see that Trump can be presidential to have confidence in voting for him. Those are the ones that it was important to reach during this debate, and Trump hit that out of the park. He was presidential while still being himself, and the contrast between him speaking extemporaneously and Biden trying desperately to stitch together his prepared speeches was painful to watch.
I believe that the first one was for us, the folks that love to see fierce Trump. And this one was for those folks who didn't know if he could be "presidential". He crushed it last night as well, but in a more measured composed way.
It certainly helped that it was 1.1 v 1, instead of the 2v1 were used to seeing.
