Why on earth not? Because they sold the kids, people. Sold them and they're dead to them, or they fear punishment if they get them back, or both. These kids were not with relatives, DNA testing is done to prove it. They have been rescued for now from being trafficked and horribly abused or killed.

This is despite not having widely deployed rapid DNA testing capability. The environment encouraging this type of child trafficking was created by Barack Obama with his EO on illegal kids. Prior to the DACA bullshit people didn’t try to cross with their kids very often. Some of those kids die or are exploited in the worst ways possible. Nice going, Obama.
While I agree that the DACA EO provided additional incentive to cross the border with kids or sell them to others who wanted to cross the border, the fact that DACA exists does prove that crossing the border with kids was widespread prior to Obama. Most of those moms went on to have other kids (anchor babies) to make it even easier for them to stay.
We need to de-incentivize it in every way possible.
If you look at the post DACA explosion in the number of family units crossing the border it is obvious that DACA had a negative effect.
Border Patrol effectively has to let the families cross the river unmolested to prevent drownings. In McAllen those families would all cross onto a peninsula on the US side and then walk for another mile to where the BP would be waiting with busses. A couple days in holding to be processed and they would be cut loose with an appearance date and some other goodies.

One of my neighbors was an illegal immigrant from Honduras. Some may wonder why I didn't call ICE, but she had a 6th grade education and really didn't understand much of how the world works; her kids couldn't go to a good school, and her lazy drunkard husband wouldn't get a good job even though he was a tradesman, so she hired a coyote, came here through the desert, and got a job. Worked here a few years to put her kids through school, and then self-deported. I knew she was going to self-deport when I met her, and I felt bad for her, so I didn't say anything.
So anyway, she left a few months after the "muh kidz in cages" thing. She told me straight up, "I came through the desert with those coyotes. Anyone bringing their kids with them is a child abuser"!!

They have no documents, no proof, and even if they did we would have to go through a normal immigration process to confirm that those docs are real.
