You noticed that joe had a cheat sheet with multiple pages. Those are the answers to anything Trump might bring up. So while Trump was still speaking, the voice in joe's ear said "go to answer #17" joe looks it up and has an answer when its his turn.
This is why he called Trump 'abraham lincoln', answer #42 was if trump mentions the name, call him that name but it didn't fit. Answer #6 was if he corners you on china or hunter, start talking about people sitting around kitchen table, change subject.
Toward the end of the debate his drugs were wearing off and he slurred his words and made stupid mistakes like "poor boys".
