buh-bye clients. People hate politics in sports and I'm sure they aren't fond of it being in there face when doing business.

175
MeSewCorny [S] 175 points ago +175 / -0

Many businesses were pissed because they specifically work to keep politics out of their employees work environment and this payroll service abused their trust and emailed their woke letter to every one of their employees and even had the gall to state they had a right to do so under the 1st amendment.

Even at 1 cent per email. That’s still way over the limit. I don’t predict his board will be to happy when they lose a percentage of their customers.

6

1 cent an email is still quite exepensive.

74

it's laughable since he said something about it was his responsibility to make sure the company was around. He may have fucked up

50

It's a US company, but as a Canadian you can still sue in US court. Each separate email in violation of the CAN-SPAM Act is subject to penalties of up to $42,530.

I think this company just bankrupted itself

We specifically have fired people for spewing politics in company email internally (this became a permanent rule after a knock-down drag-out flame war happened in an email chain early this year.)

I can see lots and lots and lots of cancelled contracts.

Seriously, dude's a flaming idiot.

Expensify is a small San Francisco company....7 employees...5 members on board of directors...10 investors. The CEO is one of the two founders (founded 2008).

I am wondering if the CEO ran this little stunt by his Board of Directors (who are supposed to prevent idiot elitist CEOs from doing stuff lie this) before doing this or -- more importantly -- by his 10 investors, who might not be too thrilled with losing part of their investment.

By telling us they are based in San Franshitsco I can imagine what type of morons are on the board of directors. They're all too excited to watch the ship sink for their self righteous woke culture.

9
PraiseBeToScience 9 points ago +9 / -0

This explains the CEO's stupid post about how they 'talked it over'.

They're a bunch of faggot San Francisco soycucks, so they thought everyone in the country was a cockgargling traitor commie like they were, because "everyone I know agrees with me!"

16
TD_Covfefe_Crusader 16 points ago +16 / -0

Yep, this is an egregious abuse of the provider/customer relationship and this clown CEO needs to be held personally responsible along with the company itself. I hope they are sued into oblivion.

I work for a company comprised of some 2000 physicians with $15,000 annual expense accounts. They are, by my estimate, at least 75% Trump voters. They are boiling mad and Expensify is almost certain to lose the account.

47

Perhaps not all your staff agree with Mr Trump, but one thing is for sure, a contracted vendor should stick to providing their services at a competitive price.

That is all.

29
TampaMAGA 29 points ago +29 / -0

I would imagine that half our company is Pro Trump, half no, just because we have one office in GA and the other in California. I heard from a lot of employees who were f’n pissed.

I don't see anywhere in here that would let them classify this email as a "transactional or relationship message". This would be the equivalent of the Biden campaign harvesting emails and using them for political marketing. I'm sure someone in the legal community can find something illegal about this and hit the company.

77
MeSewCorny [S] 77 points ago +77 / -0

Many in the comments are saying it is akin to a political contribution.

59
Rainman 59 points ago +59 / -0

Yep sure looks like an in-kind campaign contribution which I think Biden has to report

20

This would be easy to quantify because companies charge for sponsored sends all the time. However they only sell opt-ins.

17

you mean Trump, because that e-mail just red pilled 10m people lmao.

16
Rainman 16 points ago +16 / -0

Honestly, if I got a partisan email from a vendor, that would end the relationship immediately and probably vote the opposite as you suggest just out of principle

16
MeSewCorny [S] 16 points ago +16 / -0

I dunno, I may leave the service, but shoes flipped, there's no way in fucking hell I would flip from Trump to Biden. I think it depends on how political a person is. As a business owner I would be pissed because I would not want politics discussed in the workplace. I may disagree with Biden or even Hillary supporters, but as a boss I would respect my employees right to support who they want. Were a letter like this for either candidate to flow to my employees from some service I contract with, and bring politics into my employees work environment, I would drop them, even if they were hardcore Trump. No person should be shamed for their political position or bullied because everyone else around them is a Trump supporter and they are a Biden supporter (even if they are a fucking low information idiot), or vice versa.

This is great in a lot of ways because it shows how desperate they are. This CEO was willing to throw himself, his business, his corporate partners, his investors, and even his employees into the fire to prevent another Trump term. They're coming unglued. And while that certainly means we're winning, it also makes our opponents unpredictable.

Unpredictable means dangerous.

Here's the email, I got it at fucking 2:30am waking me up

I know you don’t want to hear this from me. And I guarantee I don’t want to say it. But we are facing an unprecedented attack on the foundations of democracy itself. If you are a US citizen, anything less than a vote for Biden is a vote against democracy.

That’s right, I’m saying a vote for Trump, a vote for a third-party candidate, or simply not voting at all -- they’re all the same, and they all mean:

“I care more about my favorite issue than democracy. I believe Trump winning is more important than democracy. I am comfortable standing aside and allowing democracy to be methodically dismantled, in plain sight.”

If the polls are accurate, there’s a roughly 50% chance that you agree Trump needs to go. You know what to do: show up on November 3rd and vote for Biden. Or even better, don’t wait until then: vote today. Go to Vote.org if you need help figuring out how.

The rest of this email is intended to address the concerns of those who disagree, and I’ll try to take the most likely questions in turn:

Q: Why do you care so much about democracy? Democracy is core to our business success, in a variety of ways. Internally, we are a famously “flat” organization -- nobody reports to anyone else, and advancement is the result of meeting well defined criteria as judged by the vote of those who have already advanced. How we compensate each other is left up to a team vote as well. Even our external business model depends on individual employees “electing” to adopt Expensify as individuals, and then “campaigning” internally to get it adopted companywide. At every layer, democracy is our core competitive advantage -- both as a company, and as a nation. But that advantage is only as strong as the clarity of our rules and the fairness of their application. Any attempt to disrupt the rules or apply them unfairly is a direct threat to the strength of our company, and the strength of our nation.

Q: What gives you the right to tell me what to do? The first amendment. To be clear, you don’t need to listen. But the first amendment exists to encourage people like you and me to find some way to talk about the issues that matter, set aside our differences, and find a common ground on which to collectively govern 331 million citizens. Yes democratic self-rule can be inconvenient. But a burden of democracy is that this is literally our job, so I’m asking all of us to take it seriously.

Q: But you’re a company, shouldn’t you remain neutral? Expensify depends on a functioning society and economy; not many expense reports get filed during a civil war. As CEO of this business, it’s my job to plot a course through any storm -- and all evidence suggests that another 4 (or as Trump has hinted -- 8, or more?) years of Trump leadership will damage our democracy to such an extent, I’m obligated on behalf of shareholders to take any action I can to avoid it. I am confident our democracy (and Expensify) can survive a Biden presidency. I can’t say the same about Trump. It’s truly as simple as that.

Q: Don’t you think you’re… exaggerating a bit? I truly wish I was. I wouldn’t be sending this email if this election were just about “normal issues” -- taxes, legislative priorities, healthcare, etc. But it isn’t. This election is a referendum on what limits, if any, we place on our elected leaders to govern us in a fair and representative way. This election will decide if widespread voter suppression is an acceptable governing tactic.

Q: Doesn’t everyone suppress votes? Not like Trump. This is the most heavily litigated election in history, with over 300 lawsuits rushing through the courts before election day. And in every case, Biden is pushing to enable voters while Trump is pushing to suppress them. The trend couldn’t be more clear: Biden wants democracy, Trump does not. A vote for Trump is to endorse voter suppression, it really is very basic. This isn’t about party politics: if Biden were advocating for half of the voter suppression that Trump is actively doing, then I'd be fighting against Biden, too. This is bigger than politics as usual: this is about the very foundation of our nation.

Q: Isn’t Trump just trying to prevent voter fraud? Voter fraud is virtually nonexistent, as overwhelmingly shown by data showcased by the White House itself. That data comes from the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank counting every single known case of voter fraud since 1948, which adds up to only 1,290 distinct votes over 78 years. In 2016 alone there were 138 million votes. There is just no credible argument that voter fraud is significant, even based on Trump’s own data.

Q: Isn’t Biden just using more widespread voting to get elected? Absolutely. This is the heart of the issue. Biden believes that enabling more people to vote will help him win. Biden wins by promoting democracy; Trump wins by suppressing it. A vote for Biden is a vote for democracy.

Q: So what if Trump gets elected by voter suppression, all’s fair right? Well that’s what we’re going to decide, on November 3rd. Do you want your elected official to win based on the merits of their ideas? Or based on the ruthlessness of their voter suppression? And if you’re ok with “just a little suppression” -- where do you draw the line?

Q: Why send me this when the polls say Biden is going to win? The polls said Trump was going to lose last time, and he didn’t. But even if the polls can be trusted, that might still not be enough. Trump has stated repeatedly he will only honor an election that he personally feels is fair. So much depending on his personal judgement is worrying, because he has rejected the overwhelming expert consensus that voter fraud has been negligible historically, and has also said he believes it would be impossible to lose a fair election. Accordingly, the only way to ensure a peaceful transition of power is to ensure this election is an overwhelming, undeniable landslide in favor of Biden. Any excuse to question the election is an opportunity for Trump to refuse to leave the White House, plunging this country into a Constitutional crisis bordering on civil war. No matter how slight that risk might be, the consequences of it happening would be so catastrophic to society and the economy, we need to do all we can to prevent it.

So one final plea. As a fellow citizen, I fully support and respect your Constitutional right to disagree -- and as an avid supporter of democracy, I value that disagreement. Constructive, well-informed debate (hopefully using the most accurate, least biased news source available) is what makes this nation so exceptional.

But the Constitution is only as strong as the respect we give it. I’m asking you to cherish it close to your heart, and demand that those you elect do the same.

-david Founder and CEO of Expensify

Was working on an expensify integration for one of my projects/Clients. That just got canned.

Honestly, we were going to pay them XXXX amount to basically be a phone app and receipt scanner. It will cost us xxxxxx to build our own in a cross platform App way. Well make the money back in 3 years.

IlhanOmarsFagBrother 7 points ago +7 / -0

How about SAS Concur? That's what we use and I didn't get a faggy email this morning

4
ElMalakai 4 points ago +4 / -0

To be honest, we're trying not to be tied to SAP, for legal reasons.

Honestly, it's easy. At this point I already let them email/text receipts to us, and start a process. To make an app that allows for additional details, and a disconnected mode, not to hard.

Hmmm, I wonder what this company's email provider would have to say if some of those 10 million recipients reported him for spamming them? He really screwed the pooch on this one. Sending out unsolicited political emails to folks on their (most likely) work email accounts is not a smart move. Not at all.

21
MeSewCorny [S] 21 points ago +21 / -0

It went to all of the employees of business owners. Imagine if you had a business of 200 people and you worked to keep the environment politically free because you knew how emotionally driven politics can make people and harm your work environment, and then all of a sudden your employees got a crazy TDS email from this company you contract through, that has been nothing more to your company than to keep payroll straight, talking about shit like Civil War and Orange Man Bad. That's why everyone is pissed.

10
Mainwar 10 points ago +10 / -0

It went to ANY email address, who has ever tried their software. We evaluated it briefly and never never touched it again. You can bet we got the email, I replied to him on Twitter.

8
HumblePede 8 points ago +8 / -0

I know, and it is heinously inappropriate, isn't it? Who in their right mind would think it's okay to abuse the information collected from your customers in such an obviously unwanted way?

I hope some, if not all, of the recipients report Expensify's spamming to whoever provides email services for Expensify. They should all also mark the emails as spam. That'll definitely get the provider's attention if their mail servers get blacklisted.

Just unbelievable how little sense the left has sometimes...

Excellent! I hope more people follow your lead.

6
orthodoxvirginian 6 points ago +6 / -0

I don't think there is any company that would let even a paying customer send 10 million emails at once.

They likely have their own email severs on premises.

If the servers are hosted in the cloud, however, their provider would have a reason to cancel them for spamming.

6
HumblePede 6 points ago +6 / -0

If they have their own servers and are sending from their own domain/IP, then that is what will get blacklisted with enough reports. That would shut down their business pretty darn quickly until they come up with another email solution.

If they're hosted in the cloud and they get enough reports, then their provider would most likely cancel them. Again, that would be a big hit to their ability to conduct business.

If I was providing/hosting a mail server and they came to me, I would be VERY hesitant to take on their business since they've already shown a complete lack of industry knowledge on just how negatively impactful this could be for them or anyone who hosts their mail service. Who wants to expose their own mail servers to dimwits who might very well get them blacklisted as well? Yikes!

So potential black listings and loss of capability to communicate and conduct business, huge backlash from existing customers - some of whom will cancel their contracts, and a huge negative hit to their reputation. Yep, this was a bonehead decision all the way around.

I, for one, would like to see the FEC Form 3 for this In-Kind donation. I'm sure they charge a pretty penny to send an email to every address in their database.

Or are they above election law?

Are there any companies based in San Francisco that aren’t fully authoritarian leftist? At this point I’m thinking it’s good to avoid putting your own company at risk by signing a contract with anything near these loose canon CEOs.

How much VC for this company came from China? Is SF occupied territory by the CCP?

What’s Expensify?

18
sickofaltspin 18 points ago +18 / -0

A fairly big player in the expense account SAAS game. They were at least, the fines from GDPR alone will bankrupt the company before we get into CAN-SPAM and FEC filing requirements. They are toast.

Most of the people emailed actually pay taxes and therefore don't take kindly to Biden's policy.

TRAPPED_IN_BROWARD 9 points ago +9 / -0

I don’t know what this company sells or does but so help me God, if I’m ever in a position to boycott them, I will.

Edit- for whatever it’s worth, this is taken from the company’s twitter page: founder and CEO David Barrett @dbarrett

3
PinochetIsMyHero 3 points ago +3 / -0

It's a software service for managing employees' expense reports. If you run a company for which employees get to expense, umm, expenses, then you might use them.

A "civil war" of some sort is coming regardless of who wins. I just want Trump in charge when it goes down since the majority of the military will likely follow the directions of the president that was elected. It may seem Debbie downerish but it's sort of a natural human response to government corruption!
