Fracking made gas cheap, it burns cleaner, so we switched to gas and felt so warm and fuzzy about how now all the birds would sing about how wonderful we are for making the world's air cleaner and delaying global warming - except there was no net gain. By foregoing coal, coal got cheap, and China was (still is) building coal fired electric plants at an incredible pace. So the total amount of coal burned on Earth each year is about the same, all we did is make China's fuel cheaper for them to buy, and ours more expensive.
