I think this article is just trying not to get ahead of the facts. Of course Joe didn't hold any formal position in any of these businesses. But as u/attilaaquinas notes: Follow the money. When the money trail is brought to light, it will be even harder for the Biden camp to explain all the money transfers that went through Hunter or "investment" companies Hunter was a principal of, and then on to Joe. If Joe wasn't "on the books" as working for any of these companies, why did he keep getting paid? Only answer is that he was actively trying to conceal his role.
