I think they are elevating numbers to dominate the news cycle. I have seen no evidence of increasing disease. I suspect they are going to dominate the news cycle with covid. We might see some really stupid shit for next 10 days.
Unfortunately, reliable numbers typically take a full three years to fully process. Any more recent numbers are running estimates.
My guess is that when the dust settles, the death rate will actually be lower than average but still within a standard deviation of the population adjusted all-cause mortality rate.
At this point, they keep saying "cases" without explaining what constitutes a case because they're hoping people get the wrong impression. Most of those "cases" aren't sick. A lot of them haven't even tested positive. "Cases" includes anyone being "contact traced" due to proximity to someone who did test positive.
