youtube-dl software got whacked with a RIAA DMCA take down from [Microsoft owned] Github. Command line updates [youtube-dl -U] aren't working at the time of this post.

I'd expect it'll turn up elsewhere on the Internet, but not immediately and the maintainer's comment is "no comment" In the mean time, if you don't have it, if you try to get it, triple check the validity of the download site. When software like this goes away, it's a an aribtrage siutation for the malware providers. The port command on a Mac, and the apt-get command on linux may still be able to get the software.

youtube-dl has many valid uses. There are software alternatives to youtube-dl, but these may get the banhammer as well, if the RIAA has declared war.

Youtube seems to have never gone after youtube-dl.

Update: The youtube-dl software has been changed to remove the parts the DMCA could complain about, and is now generally available.
