A son with an addiction is a son that you can control. He can't snitch you out if you can turn him over to the police, and if he ever gets caught, you can just go "Oh i had no idea, my boy needs help" and then send him off to a "rehab facility" for a bit until the heat dies down off of you.
At least, those are the theories of how it works. Reality is your crackhead son that you've been having working with some of the slimiest criminals in the world gets so high he fucks up his laptop with hella incriminating evidence on it and then forgets to pick it up from the repair shop.
brighter minds than mine theorize that leaving the laptop and failing to pick it up was either a freudian or intentional slip by hunter; he just wanted out of the life. someone else pointed out to me that when a lot of the ukrainian stuff was happening, hunter was in and out of rehab. also, someone else pointed out that beau received 3 medals/citations (two posthumously) while his father was veep...and that no-one can figure out how he earned them, being a jag officer, or why he was "stationed" where he was. also, now i know why the biden niece that got arrested for credit card theft/fraud, is as fucked up as she is.
That was the part that hit me the hardest. My son had his issues and I busted my butt to steer him straight. I can't imagine deliberately putting him risky situations with crime syndicates and mobsters.
