I feel ya. I want to shine a light on the evil so we can slaughter it, but I completely understand the, not so much "sweep it under the rug" but "acknowledge and ignore while possible" mentality.

I'm just afraid it's got some kind of gigantic colony under there and it's going to break out. The sooner we deal with it, the less damage occurs because of it.
