This was what I thought four to five years ago, but it turned out I was wrong. I wanted Trump and Sanders to win their primaries to bring change to the system. I wasn't worried about the socialism part of Bernie's campaign because I didn't think there was much popular support in America for socialism. That turned out to be very wrong, there is quite a lot of support for socialism in America, which inevitably becomes communism when you give all of the economic power to the government.
You're right that the majority of the left are not socialists, but don't underestimate it. There are far more socialists than there are members of white supremacy groups, like 200x as many.

I certainly agree America has a sizeable socialist/communist populace. I don't agree that its ~40% of the country.
