Most of the people that yell “SCIENCE” or go out of their way to tell you that they “BELIEVE IN SCIENCE” are actually the dumbest and least technologically capable morons that I know. Not one of them could change a lawn mower spark plug let alone describe the intimate workings of the power grid.
Peak load plants are quick reacting power plants that “cover” instantaneous increases in load traditionally. More demand on the system, peaker plants throttle up to cover the load. With renewable energies peak load plants not only have to cover the demand side, but now they have to cover the supply side as well. When the wind stops blowing, the sun goes behind a cloud, when it’s super hot at sunset and AC demand rises while solar generation falls off. Peak load plants step in to fill the gap.
The only scalable, reliable, technology that can be deployed in all geographies are combustion turbines that run primarily on natural gas and to a much lesser extent oil. No matter how much these commies want to eliminate fossil fuels, there is no way to run a renewable energy dependent power grid without them. Well there is nuclear….
