You and your nobles and your wives and concubines have been drinking wine from them while praising gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone—gods that neither see nor hear nor know anything at all. But you have not honored the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny!
24So God has sent this hand to write this message.
25“This is the message that was written: Mene, Mene, Tekel, and Parsin.
26This is what these words mean:
Mene means ‘numbered’—God has numbered the days of your reign and has brought it to an end.
27Tekel means ‘weighed’—you have been weighed on the balances and have not measured up.
28Parsin means ‘divided’—your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”
29Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was dressed in purple robes, a gold chain was hung around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.

Just pointing out. Why did Belshazzar make Daniel only third in the kingdom? It’s because he, himself, was technically only second. His father King Nabonidus, son-in-law of Nebuchadnezzar, was still alive, but he’d hared off to Arabia to excavate buried temples (really!) and left his son as Prince Regent.
So how did Belshazzar die? According to Jewish legend, he’d warned the palace guards that an assassination attempt was to be made on him that night, and not to let anyone through the palace gates even if they claimed to be the king himself. Later that night he apparently forgot these instructions and went outside for some reason (review the troops? go to the outhouse? Who knows). The guards saw him trying to enter and barred his way; he yelled “You fools, don’t you see that I’m the king?!” Guard said “Yeah, they told me you’d say that.”, grabbed the sconce off the wall and brained him with it.
That's interesting regarding Nabonidus. I have heard the story about Belshazzar's death. A great deal can be learned by that story. What would have happened if he just humbled himself before God instead of trying to escape God's judgment?
