I've read that mail, sent between two addresses in the same small town, must first be shipped to the closest larger city that has a sorting facility, and then shipped back before it can be delivered.
The biggest problem in the USPS is the union. Incompetent mail carriers cannot be fired and are often promoted into mgmt to get them out of the way but they ultimately fuck everything up worse.
