Trump doesn't act like an intellectual so they think he is stupid. He is obviously extremely sharp, but he also can read people like a book and has common sense. People underestimate him because they assume he is dumb yet he continues to hand them their ass time and time again. He has changed the rules of the game, and they haven't even realized it yet.
They believe the reverse as well, that just because someone presents well and is articulate that he is somehow an intelligent, competent and good person.
I have family members also voting straight R but even they say they wish Trump was “more presidential, like Biden”. People are far too programmed for style over substance.
