FDR, a democrat, caused this... Obama and his cohorts are still running a shadow government, plotting and scheming in the background... Obama thinks he is a king... Plus he is running desperate and scared...

I think Trump or another president should have one extra term under extreme circumstances and that would include investigating and sabotaging his presidency and framing him and impeaching him for going after criminals.

But first lets have the military tribunals.

We kind of need this with the term limits we have. You can only accomplish so much in 8 years. That's why the bulk of the shit happens in the federal bureaucracy. Shit that takes decades to complete.

The Japanese say: a society grows great that plants seeds for trees who's shade they will never enjoy.

If we want anything like this here, we need a "shadow government" or we have to end the 8-year term limit. The voter decides in the end.

what low energy nonsense

the bulk of the shit happens in FB (assuming that's true) because the congress has delegated its authority to other Letter Agency orgs. They don't want to attract attention for making policy (AKA THEIR JOB). So they push it to orgs where they can order people to do things without having to pass laws or get any direct political blowback.

This isn't about term limits and it isn't because we have "only 8 years" of a president. 8 YEARS is a long fucking time to get things done. You can get a PHD in 8 years. The problem is the work output of our lazy fuck government.

You’re right, the legislature has relegated policymaking to their 3-letter agencies. It is tragic, because important discussions do not take place in the public eye.

8 years is NOT a long time, especially when you have to spend 2 of your first years making the case for your next 4 years. Germany doesn’t have term limits, and Merkel has been in power for 15 years.

I think Trump would still have won against Obama in 2016.

In heaven we will all be sitting in a room filled with popcorn, watching Trump humiliate Obama in a series of debates.

Or a 3 term GW Bush. Also bad.

I think it would actually change the party dynamic a lot. You’d see a lot more Presidents getting primaried by their own party because that artificial 8-year limit would be removed.

Plus I bet Hillary wouldn’t have given up so easy in 2008 if she knew she may have to wait longer than eight years to take the seat.

It’s an interesting concept to theorycraft.

It is a neat idea indeed, but there's a certain balance to be had here. While we could get an additional few years of Trump, we'd have had extra years of Obama as well, and Obama was so damned slick that I don't think Trump would have beaten him in an election.

I do think it would be interesting if we got rid of the term limits, but then presidents could be recalled. Not impeached by congress (which we've just learned will be a political farce for the remainder of time), recalled on a 2/3 vote of the states, after which there's a new election within 6 months. It's a state level thing just like constitutional amendments, so Cali and NY don't automatically get their way.

Obama was elected only for white guilt.

And he went against Romney and McCain, not exactly charismatic individuals.

Hmm, is there anything in the constitution that prevents an amendment from being super specific to a single individual?

3
Barbs 3 points ago +4 / -1

Yes, unfortunately. They’re called “bills of attainder” which means the Federal government can’t write laws that target a specific individual or organization, they can only target broad swaths.

Bills of attainder prevent targeting individuals for adverse action. I don't think that applies. The proposed Amendment will read:

Our beloved Donald J. Trump, God Emperor of the United States, Doctor, Cowboy, Very Stable Genius, Greatest President Ever, is hereby entitled to run for President without limit and serve as many consecutive terms as he desires. Also, his impeachment at the hands of confirmed traitors is constitutionally undone and forever void and historically erased. Long live Trump! God bless the USA!
