SO true. I am a Medieval history buff--the situation we're in today exactly mirrors the hold that the church had on the European populace--only priests (today-=journalists) were allowed to interpret and discuss the Bible (today=actual news events). Common folk were burned alive when they dared to read and interpret the Bible themselves.
The MSM today is nothing but a middleman between actual news and the populace receiving that news. They're obsolete and refusing to realize that. If an event happens in Wherever, USA, it will be reported and disseminated and discussed via the internet in minutes. Who needs corporate media to 'filter' and 'interpret' it? Nobody.
I'm not worried about the media monopoly, I'm worried about the jank social media which is the new mainstream. Luckily, independents are starting to step up and create communities. Soon it'll be a social market (which is what should have been happening anyways over the last 30-35 years)

News media became rich & comfortable, they forgot their way and became what they hated.
They still tell themselves they're protecting the people, but the people they're protecting are themselves and their masters.
