Nixon largely ran on Vietnam in 1968, and all the racists supported Wallace. In 1972, Nixon won by a historic margin and had broad support in all regions. The South didn't start going Republican until Reagan in the 1980s, when working class people were leaving the Democratic Party in droves. Much of the Southern states remained blue well into the 1990s, with big shifts in 1994 (Gingrich's Contract for America), and 2010 and the Tea Party movement as the final nail in the "Blue Dog" coffin.
