The court lost it's credibility when they caved to FDR and his minions when they threatened to pack the court. The court probably figured that they were saving the USA, but they weakened it and themselves terribly.
Every time the court caves to optics, they hurt themselves long-term. In Marbury v. Madison, Marshall twisted himself to avoid offending Federalists and Anti-Federalists, and he instead elevated the court to a level of overimportance that doomed it to controversy forever. In the Switch in Time that Saved Nine, the court sold its integrity to avoid the wrath of FDR. In Roe v. Wade, they legislated a "compromise" that satisfied no one and turned abortion into the preeminent judicial issue for the future. When Roberts voted to save Obamacare, he did the same thing with that which Roe did for abortion.
