They put the bread in the toaster, walk away and sit down to read the paper. Care giver comes in at noon to check on them and hear that they are hungry.

Care giver goes to kitchen and finds burnt toast still in the toaster and butter untouched in the dish by the saucer, napkin and knife.

That few moments between pressing down the toaster and walking away to wait for toast, is enough to completely erase the short term memory of what they were doing five minutes ago.

Joe Biden is doing that every time he takes a question without being set up with an ear piece and teleprompter. He cannot remember, because the memory was never stored, it is as gone as a parent playing peek-a-boo with an infant.
