I have a theory that it's actually the other way around, that the mentally ill people know something isn't right and that's why they do drugs.
However, "drug" is an almost meaningless word. Alcohol withdrawal can kill you and so can Xanax. Opioids and stimulant withdrawal cannot kill you under normal circumstances (opioids might if you cant get water and become dehydrated, but they otherwise wouldn't kill from withdrawal alone).
Too much caffeine can also kill you. However you can take nearly any amount of Xanax and as long as you dont drink, it won't be lethal from toxicity. Psychedelics are also not toxic.
On your first theory, I agree that people "self medicate", especially for depression. I smoked pot, smoked cigarettes and drank too much for years trying to cope with the awful bullshit I went through as a kid. It was my shitty way of dealing with it and it followed me into adulthood. Fortunately I'm off all of that and it never spiraled too badly out of control for me like it does for so many.
But there's no question that a person who abuses their body with drugs and alcohol for long enough will develop (among other things) mental illness. I've witnessed it with my own eyes, the raving crackheads on the streets of the South Loop in Chicago. Not just physically destroyed (they move like zombies) but quite literally out of their minds!
And don't let your personal drug preference taint your view of this, but if you smoke pot for long enough and regularly enough, it's going to fuck up your brain chemistry too. Everybody knows the "old hippie" stereotype, the 50-something wacko that still gets high and can't seem to string reality together anymore. If you ever spent time in a Deadhead lot or a Phish lot you know exactly what I'm talking about. They don't live in society anymore, so it's not likely you'll know many as neighbors or friends, but you might be related to one. They belong in a nut house, but usually they're just drifters, vagrants or mooching off family.
I’m 25 and I notice a lot of people my age who smoke weed regularly. The ones that smoke it everyday are super anxiety and paranoid filled almost all the time and it only get worse when they are high. It’s also super rare to find someone who doesn’t smoke weed where I’m at and it’s pretty sad. Most who smoke it everyday are also very unmotivated.
Lol ok Im an engineer and my boss is like 64 and smokes pot every day since teenage years and he is pretty damn good at work and he's not an idiot. Furthest thing from what you described. I do know an old hippie whos 73. He's a little more like the stereotype you described but not as exaggerated. And if his brain is off it's probably because he dropped acid 5 thousand times over the years. I don't think it's the marijuana.
What are you talking about? 50 year old deadheads are the final wave of the last great peak of the Dead (86-90) and after Touch of Grey, the fans were much more mainstream.
Tucker Carlson has seen like 50+ shows and interviewed Phil Lesh.
Tucker Carlson is literally that 50 year old deadhead you're talking about.
Keep in mind, cannabis is only recently acceptable. The people you "see" are the people who are open about it. I'd argue that the people who only consume cannabis and not alcohol are much better off as a result. That doesn't mean they're going to tell you about it.
Interesting how you leapt to accusing me of saying it's ALL deadheads, instead of a specific type of person you would see in the lots.
Phil Lesh has been sober for how long now? Even Trey Anastasio is sober now (like 15 years now I think).
You really jumped far from the point I was trying to convey because I poked your monkey and he REALLY didn't like it. Sorry buddy. I hope you can someday see what I'm trying to tell you.
From what I've seen, these are what contribute to mental illness the most. It just takes lots, over an extended time. But I came here to joke about this line; since they're not toxic ...
I think they helped me a lot, but they shouldn't be legal. They're sort of like a reset. You can reset good or reset bad.
Also, frequency isn't the issue, it's depth. I think low doses even biweekly for extended periods (months) are fine. It's when taking heavy doses of stimulating ones that you can run into issues.
I think the goal should be low dose so some of the ego remains. The reset still happens, but there is enough control to still observe and gain insight.
Still, I cannot stress this enough, that is behind me now but I have benefited greatly. There is a risk and they need to be considered seriously for what they are. They are not toys.
Funfact : SSRIs target the same exact serotonin receptor. They were developed with psychedelic research.
Joking aside, it sounds like you may know that the mental health profession sees unexplored value in psychadelics.
How many places are they legal?
Lack of legality has resulted in lack of research. I agree with you that the beneficial use is probably in low dose, under tight control. This is looked at as a possible use when nothing else works.

Drugs cause mental illness if you do them for long enough (which isn’t that long).
Even more so in teenage years. Especially for men.
These antifa tards roaming the streets are examples of people who smoked enough pot, then meth or opioids to fry their brains in their youth. Sad.

I wonder where I said "every single person who smokes pot will end up that way"?
Hmmm.
