I know how it started many, many years ago, but I see it now and I read it as global elite, but I might not be as sensitive or knowledgeable about it as you.
I've seen it used around the names Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Rupert Murdoch and Brian Williams, and I don't think you can get much Waspier than them.
It's only used by people who don't have the balls to say what they mean.
They want to spout slurs but aren't righteous. They know they're wrong, so they act like a victim and try and garner sympathy for their lack of fortitude.
Don't mean to defend it or pick a fight and I certainly never use it. I could easily be wrong about it but I see it used probably as often with non-Jewish names (or at least people I don't think are Jewish) which makes me think it has an expanded meaning now.
It could just be that the people using it are mistaking non-Jews for Jews or conspiracy theory level stuff, but I think its usage has evolved beyond shitposting. I believe the word "shyster" was originally considered an antisemitic slur (albeit decades ago), and is now considered uncontroversial and widely used.
Totally get being pissed about it, though, and I'm probably not looking at it as closely or cautiously as you are.
