I've never jumped on the hate-Fauci bandwagon, but if he thinks it's going to be "years" before Americans drop all the COVID-scare stuff and go back to living their lives normally, he's in for a big surprise. He knows medicine and epidemiology, but his grasp of how people work is shaky.
Everybody has fans. I think Fauci deserves a lot of credit for having held his position through 6 Presidents -- he certainly understands how Presidents and their trusted advisers work. And he's certainly intelligent and competent in his own field. But general social psychology is not part of his field and not something he has an instinctive grasp of, and that's why he can't see that there's no way in hell anything like the current state of affairs will continue for "years" in the US.

My biggest concern is a critical mass of citizens want to stay home, want to shut things down, and take a perverse joy in being "scared" for their health. The perfect excuse not to do anything or interact with anyone, the triumph of depersonalization coupled with lethargy.
This is like a new war on drugs or terror. They want this to go on for as long as possible while doing the totalitarian tiptoe to seize control of the system.
The sad reality is that he is not wrong. The psychological torture we have endured will have widespread and long lasting implications.
I no longer fear SARS-COV-2 but I do fear the damage the psyop has done. Society has changed for the worse. Fear and uncertainty has infiltrated our subconscious. Inhumane norms have taken precedent.
Casting aside these negative effects will be a long and difficult battle. Only those with true faith will have the strength to endure and repair the wounds. If you can not be one of those people, look for them, they are out there and will help you.
