"We will no longer surrender this country or its people to the false song of globalism."

  • Donald J Trump

A list of Trump foreign policy achievements

North Korea

  • (1) Obama made it clear North Korea would be the greatest challenge for the Trump administration.

08/09/17: Trump announced his Maximum Pressure Policy and warned North Korea of "Fire and Fury" in the event NK decided to attack their neighbors.

Since that announcement (2) major summits & (1) historical meeting at the demilitarized zone happened. North Korea has normalized communication and diplomacy with their neighbors.

The Middle East

Grand strategy to form alliances

  • (2) 05/21/17: Trump's first foreign diplomatic visit was with Saudi Arabia. Set the stepping stones to set a regional alliance countering Iran. This visit helped establish the foreign policy Trump set to deliver the Middle East.

  • (3) 10/18/20: Israel established diplomatic relations with Bahrain brokered by the US. Regional rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran has played a role in this diplomacy - a decades-old feud exacerbated by religious differences, with Iran a largely Shia Muslim power and Saudi Arabia seeing itself as the leading Sunni Muslim power.

  • (4) 08/13/20: Israel established relations with the UAE. Israel and the UAE signed an agreement mediated by U.S. President Donald Trump. Under the deal, Israel and the UAE will establish full diplomatic relations, with the UAE becoming the third Arab state, besides Egypt and Jordan, to fully recognize Israel.

  • (5) 10/23/20: Israel and Sudan announced the establishment of formal bilateral ties for the first time, making Sudan the fifth Arab nation, after Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain (the latter two in 2020), to fully recognize the State of Israel.

  • (6) 09/02/20: Saudi Arabia announced that it would allow any flights going to and from the United Arab Emirates to fly over its territory, a move that would give Israel access to some of the kingdom’s airspace for the first time. Further normalizing relations.

Iran

  • (7) 05/08/18: Trump administration withdrew from the Iran Nuclear Deal.

01/03/20: Trump kills Qasem Soleimani, Iranian major general, calling the bluff of major Iranian retaliation and a lesson learned for attacking American troops in Iraq. General Qasem Soleimani was considered the second most powerful person in Iran, behind Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Syria

  • (8) 04/07/17: Trump ordered the missile strike on Syrian targets after DRAWING A RED LINE on the use of Chemical weapons. "It is in this vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons." Thus the Trump doctrine of retaliatory force against such weapons was established.

  • (9) Trump ended supplying Syrian "freedom fighters" - an Obama policy that actively fought against Assad's forces. Thus ending the Obama era defacto war in Syria.

ISIS

  • (10) 03/27/19: US forces annihilate 99% of ISIS caliphate, their Dejure governance over a stretch of ME territory.

10/13/20: Trump announces the withdrawal of troops from Northern Syria, a complete departure from Wilsonian national building.

10/27/19: Trump kills ISIS Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Washington Post declares Abu a "austere religious scholar".

Trump is the first Presidency since the 1970's to NOT start a new war / conflict.

Syria's success was due to Trump's policy of allowing commanders on the ground to make decisions with a clear and concise plan; destroy ISIS.

UN Speech

  • (11) 09/17/17: Trump's famous speech declaring a shift in American foreign policy. AMERICA FIRST.

NATO

  • (12) 2014 NATO only had 3% out of its 28 members paying 2% of their GDP.

Trump doctrine has completely shifted that approach.

Triple the amount of NATO members have met the 2% threshold and seven are within 0.5 percent of the target, while all members have increased payment.

2019, non-US NATO countries increased defense outlays more than 20 percent to $302 billion, while US defense spending increased from $660 billion to $685 billion.

RUSSIA

  • (13) Obama administration failed to stop Russia from annexing Crimea and allowed Russian forces entering into Ukraine. Trump's policies have countered Russian expansionism.

12/22/17: Trump administration approved supplying Javelin anti-tank missiles to Ukraine, capping a nearly three-year debate in Washington over whether the United States should provide lethal defensive weapons to counter further Russian aggression in Europe

03/26/18: Trump administration orders expulsion of 60 Russian officers.

Total number of policy actions on Russia: 52

Sanctions, indictments, statements, and policies have been made regarding Russia: https://www.brookings.edu/blog/order-from-chaos/2018/09/25/on-the-record-the-u-s-administrations-actions-on-russia/

Hostages

Trump Has Reversed Decades of American Hostage Policy

  • (14) Trump has successfully negotiated the return of 50 American hostages.

For the last half century, the U.S. government’s official policy for responding to the kidnapping of Americans overseas for political purposes has been to refuse to negotiate. The policy dates back to 1973, when eight members of the Palestinian terrorist group Black September overran the Saudi Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, and took hostage several foreign diplomats, including two Americans. Asked by reporters for his response, President Richard Nixon declared that “we will not pay blackmail.” Within hours, the two American diplomats, along with a Belgian colleague, were stood up against a basement wall and shot.

“President Donald J. Trump is the greatest hostage negotiator that I know of in the history of the United States,”

Robert O’Brien

ENERGY INDEPENDENCE

The more independent we become at producing and drilling energy, the less dependent we become on protecting energy located in other regions / countries.

  • (15) Under President Trump’s leadership, the United States has become the world’s number one producer of oil and maintained our position as the number one producer of natural gas.

  • American energy exports reached an all-time high, marking the first time in 67 years that our annual gross energy exports exceeded our gross energy imports.

  • Crude oil production hit new record highs both last year and the year before, leaping past the previous record set in 1970.

  • Crude oil production was up 38 percent last year compared to 2016.

  • The Trump Administration has increased exports of U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) by nearly five-fold and issued 20 long-term authorizations for LNG exports.

  • President Trump has proven that energy production and environmental stewardship are not mutually exclusive, as America continues to be a world leader in clean air, including in energy-related CO2 emissions.

  • Our Nation’s air quality has improved by 77 percent over the last 50 years, including 7 percent under President Trump.
