I'm looking to buy a complete upper and swap it out. I have a Colt AR-15 that has the carry handle, so I want to be able to mount an optic on top and with the carry handle, it's a problem due to the ridiculous height, even if I put a picatinny rail on top of it.

If I buy a complete upper, does it have everything I need installed on it out of the box, or do I need to install the bolt carrier, the charging handle etc? I have no idea how to do that.

Is it simple enough that I can take it down and swap the upper by myself or do I need to take it to a gunsmith?
The real problem is that now you're going to have a really nice Colt upper that doesn't have a lower so you get a lower and then have two ARs, and then you realize that you want an etched lower so you'll get one of those and then you don't have an upper so you get another upper and then an AR chambered in .308 sounds nice and pretty soon you have a room full of ARs.
