Hmm Wisconsin law states that you can't buy/own a gun till 18, in most cases according to google. Is self defense the exemption? This would be a closed case if he was 18 but they will probably go hard on the underage charges.
Ah I understand now. So the "most cases" part would be a situation where a kid finds himself in danger, picks up a gun and defends himself as an example. So yeah he was in his rights.

You're missing tons. Him shooting at 17 is not illegal.
Buy or own is different than use.
The law was posted here many weeks ago. He was given the gun for use by an adult and it is legal

I’m not familiar with Wisconsin law, does it state under 18 can’t use a gun, or just buy/own?
