What leftists/communists fail to understand is the most basic U.S. political strategy: move towards your Party's ideological base (further ledt/right) during the Primaries. Once you have won your Party's nomination, move toward the county's ideological center so as to gain interest from both left and right leaning voters.
These communists are terrified of upsetting their extreme-left base, whereas Trump supporters represent a near dead-center base -- not far-right at all.
Bill Clinton was a master of this. Obama slightly less so, but still understood it well enough.
