It's too late in the news cycle to drop a bombshell story to try and influence the election itself. There isn't enough time to get it circulating widely enough between now and ED to make a difference so that's out.
My guess is the left knows it's over and Trump is going to be re-elected so they're prepping this story to be something their base can scream about and push investigations and maybe float impeachment again (think "muh Russia" all over again).
