The problem is is that people mistake liberal and leftist as being the same. A liberal is a much more varied position, and can even include people like Tucker Carlson -- generally it is simply secular governance with a generally permissive attitude, although what "permissive" is, is of course varied. One could make the case that both Tucker Carlson is a liberal and Tulsi Gabbard is as well, except Tucker is right-wing and Gabbard is left-wing (but not a leftist.) A leftist is wholly devoted to ideology, does not have a permissive attitude, and generally seeks to control. A leftist is a narcissistic, selfish, pathological psychological type.
This is my definition, at least -- the older widely-adopted usages are outdated, I think, because of the existence of leftism and libertarianism. Libertarians, of course, also run the gamut from ideological crazies (Sovereign Citizens, the current libertarian party, "left libertarians" and etc.
In general the left is awful and only very few left-leaning people are alright, and thats almost 100% of the time because they're naive and think left-leaning policies even work.
It also doesn't help that the definition of liberal (and most political labels such as alt-right) seem to shift depending on individuals anyways. Do you think the first liberals were concerned with, say, 100% equality or animal welfare?
