If you look young, or otherwise seem new to the process, they might ask you. They like to have everyone applaud when there is a "New Voter!" announcement. AFAIK that's really all it is.
I was asked that when I voted for the first time, and when I said yes she announced it to the entire room and I got applauded. It was pretty cool, actually! I have always looked way younger than I actually am, so I looked like a 14 year old voting, which I'm sure is what prompted her to ask me.
Yes. Poll workers ask that to get a feel on whether you'll need instructions.

Did you look awkward, confused, or out of place? Also it may have said so on her screen if you already gave her your info, making it small talk.
I do not recall ever being asked that in Texas.
Not uncommon. They do that with younger ppl I noticed. Actually happened when I voted last week, then they shouted ' "first time voter !! "
Thanks for the answers, makes sense ❤️
They asked me as well. But it was cause they clap for new voters.
