Two people are in a hole and there is one rope leading them out. The taller person can reach it, but the shorter person cannot. The taller person takes pity on the shorter person, takes out his knife and cuts the rope in half. Now both are stuck and cannot get out. However, if the taller person helps the shorter person reach the rope then both could have gotten out.
