Pretty sure the article attributes information to police records. Probably garnered from open records, not a department official on record. Which as I've seen in other local cases is SOP, the police typically won't get involved in details other than this is what we did, how we handled it, etc. But there is typically public record involved, that usually provides more detail, especially after a court procedure, which was Friday.
