California has a "jungle primary" system in which the primary is open to voters of all parties on one single ballot. The two top primary vote getters move on to the general election. Democrats like this system because it knocks out serious challenges from the left if the Dem has to run against a Republican and it knocks out a Republican so that two left wingers face each other on the general election ballot. The "jungle system" primary system makes it almost impossible for a state to change from red to blue or blue to red because the entrenched status quo is always knocking out a major rival from either the left or the right before the general election.
Nothing is ever a lost cause provided tomorrow becomes today. It's going to be difficult to turn California around. Californians will have to get smart about how the jungle system ends up favoring the establishment and in a sense, disenfranchising the voter by kicking at least one major challenger off the ballot every election cycle. To complicate matters, it also means that millions have to become so disgusted with the establishment they are willing to risk a wasted vote time and time again. In less populated states, it may be easier to convince people since the actual numbers would be smaller. Say, in Minnesota for example, only a few thousand can swing an entire election. In California, the same percentage point, represents millions and it is much more difficult to change the minds of millions than thousands. I'm also not sure that the jungle system primary can't be challenged in court again if it's found to unfairly disenfranchise voters by throwing out viable candidates early in the process.
