LOLz, I think you're right. At least that's what it looks like when I watch Direwolf20... However, I have zero time to go through all that. So, when I play with my kids I just use the /summon command to pull one into the world. My kids and I have an understanding that when they drop into cheat mode to grab an item, I destroy the world. They don't cheat too often anymore.
If you're willing to sit down with the Direwolf20 pack and pull apart what you're actually downloading... you can actually reverse engineer the curse modpacks and create your own as all the modpack really contains is a list of mods (and what versions) for the client to download and install, and then the configs for said mods.
True that, we do that regularly ourselves. Unfortunately some of our laptops don't have a ton of memory, so we trim down the packs with only the mods we use. My kids have some mods they like/need like Optifine and some animal mods, and I also like to include Atomic Science and some other old classics from various Yogscast series. Lately we've been using Revelation as a base, and Multi-MC for the launcher as it's open source and really versatile (IMO). I've also had luck compiling LWJGL for ARM and getting various modpacks running on a Raspberry Pi in years past. Make Minecraft great again! Glad to meet a fellow modded Minecraft player :D
