Please help me understand something. I voted for the first time a couple of weeks ago (in person) and I made my picks on a machine, went next, next, next, until I was done and then pushed the button that said something like "cast your vote." I didn't have to scan any ballot, it was all on a machine.
Can someone please explain to me why I didn't have to "scan a ballot" like I hear many say they had to do?
States set up thier voting systems, so your state doesn't do physical ballots. Paper ballots are internationally recognized as better for election security, as a physical records can be compared to software results.

That's the point. Swap it in for one they prefer. If you scan it yourself it registers that vote, but if it doesn't get scanned they can swap in a prefilled out ballot and toss yours.
Do not give these people your ballots ever, tell them you will wait there for them to “fix” their machines and don’t let others have their votes stolen by corrupt workers, convince people to wait with you. I bet you if we did this then many of these broken machines wouldn’t be broken for long

My area uses machines with a myriad of options for people with disabilities, super large print, and massive boxes to click with lots of space between so it's hard as hell to screw up.
It then shows you verification of your votes.
Then you get a physically printed iteration of your votes that you can further verify.
At that point, you carry it to that same damn machine they were saying was broken and you hand feed your ballot in yourself. No humans other than you touch your ballot. No button pressing, no actual touching of the machine, just toss your paper in and it reads the ballot, marks the ballot as read, dumps the ballot in the receptacle (trashcan looking thing the computer is sitting on), and tallies the vote. During a recount, they have both the physical printed ballot, and the electronic tally to verify.
[edit] Only thing I wish they'd add is a receipt with a QR code, or URL with a two-part randomized key as a pseudo username/password to further verify after the fact.

the NY BOE needs to clean house. 4 years ago was a disaster - machines breaking down, voter rolls inaccurate. How is this acceptable? There are only a handful of elections a year and you have an entire agency to make sure they run smoothly.
