They're not asking your party. They have the vote roles which probably include party registration. You show up and give your name, they look you up to make sure you haven't voted already, at which point they can see how you're registered.
They're not broken up, you're not telling them your party. Your party is listed on the roll next to your name, so the poll worker can see it. It would be nice if they hid that information for the general election, but they probably use the same systems and paperwork for the primaries.

I'd be in favor of this. Of course some people would still need to work--my job's an essential service, we're required to have so many on hand every single day of the year. But some states make it a law that even those workers all need 3 consecutive hours off during poll hours on voting day.
