Fill up the polling place and don't let anyone else in. Make a LOT of terrifying, annoying noises. Get the names of the people peddling this line of horseshit, take their pictures, and hound them until they are successfully prosecuted or they commit suicide.
Do not let them have them if a staffer says this to you say you will stay and wait for them to fix their “broken” machines, gather anyone else there you can to join you in waiting, you get enough people to jion you I bet you that machine will be working in a few minutes
Do not vote provisional! Those are the least likely to count. Mods deport anyone that suggest to vote provisional. They give out provisional ballots to people who go to the wrong polling place to placate them when they are making a scene.
I know it's a lot, but our very Republic depends on it! It's more than worth the cost.

If the "Voting Machine goes down" or they "can't scan it now" - DO NOT LEAVE. Just stay there, stay there ALL day if you have to, and HOLD ONTO YOUR BALLOT until they can fix them. You'd be surprised how conveniently they can start working again.
Honestly leaving them to be scanned later wouldn't be a bad idea if, and only IF... the ballots didn't have any identifying features and had no actual PRINT on them. For example, if the ONLY thing on the actual ballot was some type of barcode/QR code using a unique code only designed to be interpreted by these machines. No name or anything, that way ballots would be indistinguishable.
The only problem with that is once printed out, you wouldn't know if it actually had who you voted listed on it. Either way, you are still trusting the machine to count your vote correctly once it goes in the other machine after being printed. You have to trust that the machine won't fuck you in the first place after inserting your ballot. Assuming you COULD trust the machine to print the appropriate ballot, I think that would be a better, more secure way of doing it.
OR it could print out the barcode with a little section saying who you voted for that either gets torn off, or peeled off. That way you see that it's correct, but then remove that part by yourself before turning it in.
