I am a NY Independent that renounced my Democrat registration in 2018. Most Independents are just conservatives who don't want to be on a mailing list.
It's time to change back to R and try to get decent candidates in the primaries. Hope you don't mind learning how the sausage is made, though. It's rough.
Most Independents are just Trump supporters not yet ready to admit to being Trump supporters.
