We have a deal. They do their chores, behave, and improve on their shortcomings we identify (we chart this), they get allowance. If they both have a perfect week, they can get up to 6 dollars a week each. If they drop the ball, they can go down a dollar, to the point where they get no allowance.
At the end of the week, I tell them exactly how much they are getting and WHY. I will point out where they fell short, and where they earned. They just don't get money from me for no reason.
After 3 months of saving, my son bought Paper Mario and the Oragami King. Its his favorite game now, the first game he bought with HIS money. I asked him why do you like this game and not others as much? He said he wasn't sure, but he liked going to the store and buying it himself in particular.
I said because you bought that game yourself, with money you earned. We just didn't give it to you. He got it. My daughter has a similar story with a stuffed animal she bought.
