And the last 4 years have made me agree with that. I admit, I used to buy the 'everyone should vote, everyone should be able to vote' Kool Aid, now I say you should be 25 or older (before anyone calls me fascist, I am only 23, so I would willingly strip myself of the right to vote), have to be a net tax payer, not be on any government assistance (INCLUDING government student loans), while I'm a fan of adding you have to be a parent, the last one is one I'm willing to compromise on since that ones not as black and white as the rest. Under these rules, you'd have skin in the game to want to vote better, if you can't be on government assistance then you're not gonna vote for a gib, and you'd be older and more developed. I was a fucking Bohemian when I was 18 and have came a long way as I got older and got sober, I wouldn't make some of my decisions at 18 today cause I've had more life experience. Why I believe in the kid thing is because if you're a parent, you have a future as for if you're childless you don't have that link to the future. That's why Angela Merkel feels ok with letting Rapefugees in cause she doesn't have a daughter who's as risk of being raped by one or a son who could get killed by one.But with the parent stipulation, I do get that that one can actually be impossible for some people so that's why I'm willing to compromise on.
I think 25 is the right age to vote. You should have lived long enough to see and understand the way the world and the system really works. I was a naive idiot until I got up into my twenties.
Yeah, like I said, I'm 23, and I do think I came a long way from when I was 18 but I still think I have a little more growing up to do before I think I'm a full 'adult'. I've been on my own since I was 21 but I'm just now getting the steady job and the steady place to live and the steady life instead of the picking up an odd job or two to get by and living the partying, Bohemian lifestyle like I did for so long. That's part of why I think 25 would be the perfect age, cause at that point chances are you've grown up more than enough to be trusted enough to vote.
25-27 also happens to be the age your brain is fully developed. Wacky hormones thanks to puberty tend to settle down, too (I felt the latter really strongly considering I have an endocrine issue that affects my hormones. I could literally feel the change in my mental state at 17, and feel yet another big change at 27.)
Fun fact: This is why I think Marijuana use shouldn't be legal until at least 25 or 27 because it's greatest effects are on the developing brain. Literally dumbs people down over time and slows/blocks aspects of development. And the effects are quite prominent with repeated use, which college-aged students & younger, especially the partiers, tend to do.
Same thing for transgender kids/people who want to get surgery or take hormones to that create permanent changes. Hormones would affect gender disphoria a lot & so you should wait until your system settles itself & susses out its own problems as much as possible before taking drastic measures.

And your prefrontal cortex should be fully developed by that age
