They have federal laws for many other things. Voting seems like an easy one to set the process. Same machines, same rules, 3 days to vote (First Friday of November becomes a holiday plus Saturday and Sunday).

Voting is run by the states under a mandated federal date, per the Constitution. That's how federalism works.Theoretically, anyway. Extending the last portion past the counting deadline is why this nation is royally fucked
